Thanks for sharing your reflections here. I especially like this :"The answer for me is using older, perfectly adequate technology that does not remove my physical or mental presence." This is key - by removing opportunity, you remove a significant portion of the temptation. So glad to hear that your experience throughout this year has grown into a new way of life!
My family is currently on a mission to reintegrate older technologies that serve a purpose and do not pull people apart. During lent we cut all but one of khr streaming services, gotten a DVD player and are collecting a few DVDs to have on hand. It’s insane how DVDs sound old-fashioned but that’s the world we’re in now.
And my life really has changed dramatically since last years digital detox. That was actually another reason I cut my 52-week project short. It was no longer a fast or a detox. It was just my life. Thank you Ruth for your encouragement and gentle nudging to commit acts of anachronism!
Thanks for the thorough, thoughtful, and insightful update, Daniel. I'm happy that you discovered do much about yourself and the path you want to take. 😊 Also, my favorite book you'll find in that DR Bible is Tobit. Reads like a movie.
The Douay Rheims Bible is my far my favourite, so I’m always excited to see others reading it. Also that beautiful blue Rosary book! I love it. Exodus 90 sounds grueling, and I can’t even imagine how difficult it must have been to add to the penances. May God bless you for sticking with it all!
I’m absolutely loving that Bible! And I'm loving the Rosary book! When I first started praying the rosary it was through the Hallow App and it was helpful but I wanted to pray it without streaming it. It’s been amazing. Exodus 90 was difficult but worth it!
Daniel, good stuff! Exodus 90 was a cannonball into deep waters! Mostly we all come up for air and dog paddle around trying to make it work. My experience was similar to yours which was very beneficial. Trying to draw near to God and having him draw nearer to me, well, I am still processing all He deposited. I love your writing and you have a beautiful family. Keep up the great work! Ed
I’m so glad to hear someone gifted you a Douay Rheims Bible! I wanted to suggest that to you but got sidetracked with my own Lenten journey. Happy Easter to you & your beautiful family! 🙏🏻
You dove in head-first and learned you could swim. This is a great post and a great example of how much we really can do! Alleluia, He is risen!
Thank you Scoot! He truly is risen!!

Thank you for reading, Angela! And I've heard such great things about Tobit! Can't wait to dive into that book!

Thank you Ed for reading and for your kind words and encouragement!
I picked up cigar smoking during Exodus 90 because it was one of the few bodily pleasures that weren't part of the asceticism practices. Happy Easter!
Picking the pipe back up was fantastic and really kept me grounded. Happy Easter to you!
