Hello and welcome to week 5 of my weekly digital detox reflections. I’m not sure exactly why, but detoxing was tougher for me than the previous 4 weeks. Specifically, my day of working in complete silence. The temptation to turn on music was hard to resist. I think it was a combination of some of my favorites artists putting out new albums and the fact that it was 99 degrees Fahrenheit and I walked 22,000 steps and just wanted some relief. But I resisted and in the end, felt very good about that.
I did not take a screenshot of my screen time report this week. I was away from the phone when the notification came and then couldn't figure out how to find that info when I unlocked the screen. Instead of trying too hard to get it, I put the phone back down and moved on. So I guess that is my progress report. I was so detached from my phone I couldn’t tell you what my usage was like, which is kind of the point of all of this.
Where my thoughts have been
As a Christian, I believe that every man and woman has been created in the image of God. I am then compelled by Christ to treat every man and woman as if they have been created in His image, whether they believe this about themselves or not. If they do, rejoice!! If they do not, I must then BE His image before them to the best of my ability and pray they come to know Christ. This may be difficult, but it is the way I must live.
This is just an example of the things we are more free to think about when we are not as distracted by digital technology. I hope this may serve as a spur for some of you to consider doing a digital detox of your own. If you are doing or have done a digital detox recently, share your comments and let me know how it is going. If you have any question about doing a detox or need some encouragement, feel free to reach out. I’ll help you in any way I can.
Scripture of the Week: John 13:35
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Word of the Week
Elucidate- to clarify; to explain.
Why elucidate? It’s just a good word.
Song of the Week
“All My Tears” - Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra.
It is crazy how drug-like digital entertainments can be. I often find myself needing to apply that verse from Ephesians, "Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit" to the digital world. To avoid getting your mind entertainment-drunk. To pass on the YouTube Tequila. Great post brother!
I've been reducing screen time on my phone too. Generally fairly successfully but what I have noticed is that if I am tired, I get sucked into the ddom scrolling. I have also substituted my kindle for thr need to pick things up - I have wholesome things in there which deals with the physical addiction to holding an electronic object in my hands!
